Overview

Here we are looking at SASSA Child Support Grant and how to apply for it. It is a grant purposely for kids who are below the age of eighteen (18) years. The child is the main benefactor although the caregiver or the mother will be the recipient.

What that means is that the child should be the one who will benefit from the grant. It is to be used to buy basic things the child will need for sustenance. It is basically for the welfare of the child but not the mother or caregivers.

SASSA grants are paid to various categories of people in the country after their applications are approved after means-testing and other background checks are done.

Do you qualify for SASSA Child Support Grant or Requirements ?

According to SASSA, the applicant must be able to meet the following requirements before their application will be considered :

  • The primary care giver (could be the biological mother or just a caregiver) must be a citizen of South Africa, or permanent resident with all necessary and supported documentation or a refugee also having necessary documents. If you the applicant is not a parent of the child, then affidavit ffom the police official, a social worker or from the biological parent (in case they are alive)
  • Both child and the applicant must be currently residing in South Africa.
  • The child or children should not be older than eighteen (18)years of age at the time of submitting the application.
  • The applicant and spouse (if any) must meet the measntest. SASSA has a way of measuring one’s financial and economic conditions, if it is established that indeed both applicant and spouse live below the poverty line then they may consider the application. Here the combined annual income of the both should not be more than R105600 or R52 800 if single.
  • The applicant must be the primary care giver for the child. It can be the mother, grandparents or even at times the father (rarely though) and must be living with the child. It has to be noted here that if after complaints it is established that the supposed primary care giver is not providing the needed care, she can be stripped of the caregiver to other person.
  • The child should not be cared for any public institution.
  • If a child is applying for some other child, then here the child applicant must be at least sixteen (16) years.

Application for Child Support Grant

To apply for the child support grant, you have to visit any nearest SASSA office and fill out the forms. The forms must be filled in the presence of SASSA official. However, it has to be noted that, only the applicant or in some cases, the SASSA official can fill the forms.

The documents needed to apply are listed below and alternatives in case some of the primary ones are missing such as ID card or Birth certificate.

What Documents Are Needed To Apply For SASSA Child Support Grant?

When you are preparing to apply for the grant you need to make available the following documents:

  • Applicant’s ID Documents
  • Birth certificate of the child
  • If no lack the above documents thus birth certificate or ID document then yiu can do the following instead :
    1. Complete affidavit which is standard SASSA format and it should be done in the presence of Commissioner of Oaths along side these below
    2. A sworn statement by Councilor, traditional leader, social worker or minister of religion who personally knows the child.
    3. Temporary ID or a proof that you have actually applied for ID Documents.
    4. Baptismal Certificate if any, or school report
  • Proof of maintenance if any for the child
  • Proof of earnings or income. Can be bank statement or appointment letter or pay slip or whatever.
  • Marriage certificate if married.
  • If divorced, the documents the court gave paving way for the child’s custody.

How Much Is The Child Support Grant.

The exact amount to be paid per child under the child support grant is R460 per month. As at the time of filing this report but it usually sees an upward review annually.

Child Support Grant Payment Dates and Pay Points

Child Support Grant just like any other grants are paid primarily through SASSA ATM debit cards. However, an applicant can opt for payment at some selected pay points on a particular day.

An applicant can also request and upon approval be paid through their personal bank account or Post Office or post bank.

In all the cases, if the applicant cannot collect the grant themselves, they can appoint someone else (power of attorney or a procurator) to collect their grants on their behalf.

SASSA Child Support Grant Payment Dates 2022

Unlike the previous years before the pandemic, grants were paid in the first day of the month including child support grants, but now payments are segmented and child support grant is paid on the third day after Old Age Pension Grant and Disability grant. SASSA Child Support Grant Review

Per the act governing the social grants, SASSA may review the child support grant from time to time if they feel the need to do so. This may happen because circumstances change over time regarding the applicant’s income.

In all this, the applicant will be notified three months before the actual date of the start of the review.

The outcome of the review will serve as the basis for whether the grant should be continued or terminated.

How long does it take to get your grant approval?

On average it can take three months before the application is approved. But when the application is eventually approved, payment will be paid starting the date the application was received or submitted.
